Pilot’s Custom 823 is widely regarded as one of the standout fountain pens in its class, complemented by gold trim. At nearly six inches long when capped, it has a substantial size while still feeling well balanced in use, whether posted or not.
The pen combines its translucent styling with Pilot’s vacuum filling system, which offers the largest ink capacity in the brand’s lineup at approximately 1.5 mL. Filling is done by unscrewing the plunger knob, drawing it back, immersing the nib and section into bottled ink, and then pushing the plunger forward to create the vacuum fill. The Custom 823 is intended for bottled ink only and does not accept cartridges.
It is fitted with a 14-karat gold nib and comes packaged in a silver sateen-lined Pilot gift box, along with a 70 mL bottle of Pilot blue fountain pen ink.
