Both pens use a small rotating ball to dispense ink, but the ink formulas are what set them apart. Ballpoint pens use a thick, oil-based ink that lasts a long time, resists drying out, and writes well on most surfaces. They’re typically retractable with twist or click mechanisms, making them dependable for everyday use.

Rollerball pens use liquid or gel-based ink that flows more smoothly, similar to a fountain pen. This gives darker, more vibrant lines and a smoother writing feel, but the ink can dry out faster and usually requires a cap. Rollerball refills also tend to run out sooner than ballpoints, though they offer more color variety.

A fountain pen is a classic writing instrument that uses liquid ink delivered through a nib. Most modern fountain pens use replaceable ink cartridges or a refillable converter, while some feature piston-fill systems for bottled ink only. Though they require a little care and a short break-in period, the expressive, fluid writing they provide is unmatched.

Choosing a fountain pen is a personal experience—much like selecting a pair of glasses—balancing style with technical needs. Fine nibs are ideal for small, precise handwriting, while broader nibs create bold strokes perfect for signatures. To keep the ink flowing smoothly, the nib should be held flat against the paper without rotation.

We are frequently asked about the proper way to clean and care for a fountain pen. Here are a few tips that will ensure the best performance from your fountain pens:

1. Always use fresh ink. If your ink is over a year old, buy a new bottle.
2. Ink cartridges are fine, but a self-filling pen or the use of a converter with bottle ink will offer fewer problems.
3. If your pen is to be out of use for several weeks, clean it by flushing in cold water.
4. Never use alcohol when cleaning a pen! If the pen is really dirty, use a mixture of one part non-sudsy household ammonia to 2 parts cold water and allow the nib section to soak overnight. Flush the nib in cold running water until it runs clear and dry with a soft cloth.
5. Cap the pen properly. Hold the pen upright and place the cap on top of it. Do not drop the pen into the cap or you may end up with ink in the cap.
6. Before you fly in a plane, either fill your pen all the way or leave it empty. A sudden change in cabin pressure may cause the pen to leak if you don't follow this rule.

Fountain pens perform best when stored upright with the nib pointing upward. This prevents ink from settling in the feed or leaking into the cap. A capped pen can be safely kept in a pen cup, holder, or desk organizer at this upward angle. If the pen is cleaned and empty, long-term storage is best in a protective pen case or sleeve made from safe, acid-free materials. Proper storage will help maintain smooth ink flow and extend the life of your pen.
